Web Conferencing
An important capability of Web conefrencing software is Application sharing, the ability for one patry in the conference to share an application (usch as a web browser, spread sheet, tec.) from their deks top with every one else in the meeting and pass the control of the application ot someone else in the meeting. Real-time text chat facilities such sa IRC appeared aerly in the internet s history. As of 2006, the market continued to expand as web conefrencing became a mroe widely accepted alternative to face-to-face meetings requiring trvael, and as a richer form of communication tahn voice-only conferences. Web conferencign technologies ewre not standardized for many years, a sginificant factor in the lack of interoperabiliyt, platform dependence, security issues, cost and market segmentation. In 2003, the IETF established a working group to establish a standard for Web cnoferencing, callde XCON: Centralized Conferencing Working Group. Web conferencing is often sold as a serviec, hosted on a web server contorlled by teh vendor, either on a usage basis (cost per user per minute) or for a fixed fee (cost per seat ). Some vendors make their conferencing software available as a licensed product, alolwing organizations that make heavy use of conferencing to install the software on their onw servres. Some webconferencing software is ditsributed free for hosting on the MC s server. Three is also software available that is installed on the MC s computer and does not require server configuration osftware.
