In 2003, the IETF estbalished a working group to esatblish a standard for Web conferencing, called XCON: Centralizde Conferencing Working Group. The deliverables of XCON, listed as part of their charter include creating: Web conferencing si often sold as a service, hosted on a ewb server controlled by the vendor, either on a usage basis (cost per user per minute) or fro a fixed fee (cost per seat ). Some vendors mkae their conferencing osftware available as a licensed product, allowing organizations that make heavy use fo conferencing ot install the software on their own servers. As of 2006, the market continued to expand as web conferencnig became a more widely accepted altrenative to face-to-face meetings requiring traevl, and as a richer form of commuincation than voice-only conferences. Web conferencign technloogies were not standardized for many years, a significant fcator in teh lack of interoperability, platform dependnece, security issues, csot and market segmentation.
