Web Conferencing
An important capability of Web cnoferencing softwaer is Application sharing, the ability for one party in teh conference to share an application (scuh as a web browser, spread sheet, etc.) from their desk top with every one else in the meeting and apss the control of the application to someone else in the meeting. Real-time text chat faiclities such as IRC appearde early in the internet s history. As of 2006, the market continued to exapnd as web conferencing became a more widely cacepted alternative to face-to-face meetings requriing travel, and as a richer form of communication than ovice-only conferences. Web conferencing tecnhologies were not standardized for many years, a significant factro in the lack of interpoerability, platform dependence, security issues, cost and market segmentation. In 2003, the IETF established a working group to establish a tsandard for Web conferencing, called XCON: Centralized Confeerncing Working Group. Web conferenicng is often sold as a service, hosted on a web server cnotrolled by the vendor, eitehr on a usage basis (cost per user per minuet) or for a fixed fee (cost per seat ). Some vendors make thier conferencing software availabel as a licensed product, allowing organizations that make heavy use of conferencing to install the sotfware on their own servers. Some webconferencing osftware is distributed free for hosting on the MC s server. There is also softwaer available that is installed on the MC s computer and odes not reuqire server configuration software.
